CALCO'S STORY

Being raised by the Hannish couple Mahkhal and Kirtan for as long as he can remember, even from a young age Calco found himself taking up the practices of his adoptive parents; alchemy and archery. But it was only after a discussion with his closest friend that on a whim, he chose the path that would define his life: The study of aetherology. After several years, he would decide to focus his research on uncovering the secrets of Time Magic specifically. But when he tried to utilize what he'd learned in order to prevent great tragedy, he instead found himself trapped, removed from the flow of time completely. It would be eleven long years before he awoke: Years that passed for him in a single instant. Desiring to learn all that he had missed during his absence, and seeking to escape from his now unfamiliar home, Calco embarked on a journey to Eorzea, unaware of the grand adventure awaiting him there...Initially dismissive of companionship due to fear of losing more people close to him, it was through bonding with his newfound comrades in the Scions and beyond that he slowly learned to once more open his heart, gradually softening toward accepting friendship and love once more. That being said, he's still terrible at actually displaying such affections.Ever since first learning of its existence, he has intensively studied the emotional energy of Dynamis, considering himself the realm's foremost authority on the topic, culminating in his discovery of the power of Trance.A horrible injury to his left hand resulted in it becoming permanently damaged and scarred. It remains under the cover of his glove at all times. He is rational, analytical, and ungodly stubborn.

JOB HISTORY

BARD - Having trained under his adoptive mother in archery from a relatively young age, it was only natural that the bow would be Calco's chosen weapon to begin his journey in Eorzea with.Though it was cast aside multiple times in favor of more specialized skillsets, he has returned to it time and again as perhaps his single most reliable armament.Upon learning of the existence of Dynamis, Calco would re-evaluate much of his recent Bardic training, concluding that almost all of a Bard's abilities are drawn purely from this emotional energy, not aether. It was a great boon to his research. The King's Longbow, received as a parting gift from the the Fae king, can be summoned to his hand at will, regardless of what other weapons he may currently be using. As such, it typically serves as his trump card.[Timeframe: ARR - Late HW | Early SB - Late SB | EW]

DARK KNIGHT - The tragedy at the Vault at last awakened the shadow long laying dormant within Calco's heart. Although he successfully fought it back, it awakened once more upon his confrontation with Thordan and his Knights Twelve. And this time, desiring greater power in order to lay them low, he did not shun it.His initial defeat at Zenos's hands would see him retiring the blade for a time, seeing its fighting style as too slow and predictable for so vicious an opponent. He would, however, call upon the abyss at several more points along his journey, most notably in the battle against the final Lightwarden. As of receiving the injury to his left hand, the great sword has become nigh unusable for long periods of time, leaving him unable to effectively wield it any longer.Like the Bard, Calco believes that many of a Dark Knight's abilities draw from Dynamis as well, though with significantly more aetherial manipulation mixed in as well.[Timeframe: Late HW - Early SB]

NINJA - After his second defeat to Zenos, Calco realized that a new practice entirely would be required in order to best him at last. Believing superior agility would be his greatest option, he approached Yugiri Mistwalker with a request: To help him learn the arts of the Ninja.Although there was no time for proper training before the Warrior of Light's return to Ala Mhigo, his comrade was able to provide him with proper garments, a pair of blades, and a long-forgotten Soul Crystal. From there, he would be on his own.Realizing there was little practical difference between spellcasting and ninjutsu, Calco adapted very quickly to his new abilities, and at long last he was able to claim victory over his foe.Although his left hand has recovered enough that dual-wielding daggers is not actively detrimental, he has seen little reason to return to them since learning the ways of the Viper.[Timeframe: Late SB - SHB]

SCHOLAR - Seeing the devastation brought upon by the Flood of Light, Calco realized that for once, his strength would be better suited toward healing and support, rather than all-out offense.Having studied aetherology near all his life, Calco had no need for training nor even a Soul Crystal in order to take up this practice: Simply drawing upon his years of research, including into lost Nymian arts, the magic came to him easily. As a result of learning solely from himself, his fairy companion is not a true Nymian fairy, but rather a replica. He has named her Lux.His grimoire contains countless spells from various cultures of magic, including some few crafted by himself. He works now to increase their potencies ever further.[Timeframe: SHB - EW]

GUNBREAKER - Having lost the ability to wield the Dark Knight's claymore, Calco sought about to gaining a replacement, settling eventually on the mostly one-handed gunblade.Due to his prior skills in manipulating aether, Calco found himself incredibly adept at preparing cartridges on the fly, allowing him to use the gunblade's unique properties to their absolute fullest.Due to the nature in which he found himself wielding it, his fighting style more closely resembles fencing rather than traditional swordplay. With Makara's help, he had his gunblade modified to be much lighter weight without sacrificing its strength in order to help with this. His gunblade was destroyed entirely after a battle with a rogue construct in Shaaloani. Although he is more than capable of obtaining a new one, he currently sees little point in it.[Timeframe: Post EW - DT]

VIPER - Having become enamoured with their fighting style across his journey in Tural, it was the loss of his gunblade that fully set Calco down the path of the Viper. Before long, his skills with the twinblades eclipsed nearly all other martial practices he had learned, his years of prior experience translating surprisingly well to such an agile fighting style.Despite adapting quickly to its two-handed nature due to his previous experience as a Ninja, he primarily wields his twinblades in their conjoined form in order to put less stress on his injured hand. The blades he now wields were forged to be attuned to his aether especially, allowing him to seamlessly weave magic into his swordplay in order to further strengthen his attacks.[Timeframe: Post DT - Present]

RELATIONSHIPS

Canon Characters

Alphinaud & Alisaie - Intially thinking little of them, annoyed by Alphinaud's pompous behavior and by Alisaie's lack of restraint, but over his many adventures with the twins, Calco has come to care for them as if they were his own blood. Though he would never admit to such, he believes it is in large part thanks to them that he was inspired to truly become the hero he is.

Thancred Waters - Perhaps Calco's closest friend within the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. More than any other, he sees much of himself in Thancred, both having lost those who mattered most, and forcing themselves to continuously move forward with no regard for their own self. As such, he now tries to keep Thancred's more sacrificial tendencies in check. Thancred, in turn, is always ready to watch his back.

G'raha Tia - Even if his methods were at times questionable, Calco has nothing but respect for all that G'raha has sacrificed for the greater picture. The two work amazingly well as a team, seamlessly blending their various fighting styles together to finish fights as quickly and efficiently as possible. He does find the Miqote's sheer adoration to be a bit much at times, though.

Tataru Taru - The only member of the Scions who Calco actively fears. He has long since given up on trying to understand her nature, or her ability to force even the fiercest of opposition under her heel with nothing but words and a wide grin. He just focuses on staying on her good side.

Yugiri Mistwalker - A kindred spirit like no other. It was their mutual devotion to duty above all else that prevented their friendship from ever becoming more, though neither can claim to regret this decision. Despite this, their friendship remains as strong as ever, and they often seek one another out when the Warrior of Light's travels bring him to Doma.

Zenos - A monster who gleefully destroys all that he touches in the vain hope that he might feel something for it. Despite what the fallen prince believed, Calco did not consider them friends in any way, shape or form, and was more than happy to at long last render him unto eternal sleep.

Elidibus - Of all his foes, it is the Emissary who Calco pities most of all, firmly believing that in another life, they may have been the closest of friends, a thought only reinforced by his interactions with Themis.

Doctor Lugae - Far from his most dangerous opponent, Calco considers Lugae to only be his most annoyingly tenacious: For so long it seemed that no matter how many times he struck the madman down, he simply refused to die. Their final battle in the depths of a derelict Garlean facility saw Calco awaken to the power of Trance, allowing him to end the doctor for good.

RELATIONSHIPS

Original Characters

Kyo Nakahara - Calco's best friend. He owes what he feels is a great debt to Kyo, in part blaming himself for failing to save the Elezen's younger sister, whom he had likewise grown close with. In all the lands he has traveled to, Calco has never found a more reliable companion. When calling upon warriors from afar, Kyo is ever the first to answer the call.

Makara Thorn - For all the venom-filled barbs flung between them, it would be easy for an onlooker to mistake the two for fierce enemies. In truth, they are as close to brother and sister as possible despite not sharing a drop of blood between them. With their vastly differing areas of expertise, never mind personalities, they make for an incredibly odd yet surprisingly effective team.

Core - Having rescued the young(?) mage from a group of hunters, Calco took the tonberry under his wing for a time, the pair traveling together until the Warrior of Light was forced to seek asylum in Ishgard. It was only upon his return from the First that they would meet again, now with the means to return Core to his true form. One of the few people whose advice Calco willingly listens to.

Alhena - A bond transcending the barrier of time. Despite every attempt to disallow himself from letting another so close to his heart, for her, Calco would relent, and would become much happier for having done so. Their vow is a simple one: To stand beside and protect one another until the end of days.

Kyanite & Andesine - Having met Kyanite long before learning the truth of their connection, Calco was already somewhat protective of him, a feeling that only strengthened when the truth of his past came to light. For Andesine, though they have yet to figure out exactly what they are to one another, Calco keeps an eye on her all the same. Heavens help any poor soul who even considers threatening them, for the full wrath of the Warrior of Light would be upon them.

Bryhna Reis - Despite being rather close growing up, Calco's bond with his sister was fractured perhaps beyond repair upon his awakening from stasis, each sibling unwilling to accept the other's perspective on the disaster. Though they are capable of putting their differences aside when it matters most, they typically avoid each other if it can be at all helped.
